  • In the year ended November 2021, 48,522 new homes were granted, up 26% from the year to November 2020.
  • In November 2021, 4,688 new housing units were granted.
  • The number of new homes granted in Auckland increased by 25% last year.

Annual figures for the past nine months show more new homes being granted than ever before, said Building and Construction Minister Poto Williams.

“We’ve been building more homes than any government since the 1970s and the number of consents has more than tripled in the last decade. Now, for the ninth month in a row, we have surpassed the previous record for the most homes granted in a year,” said Poto Williams.

Estimates of Statistics New Zealand released today show that the number of new homes granted in the year ended November 2021 is at an all-time high of 48,522. This is a 26% increase from the year in November 2020.

“The sector goes above and beyond to provide the homes New Zealanders need,” says Poto Williams.

The forecasts in the 2021 National Construction Pipeline Report estimate an increase in building and construction activity through the end of the forecast period in 2026. The annual report provides a projection of national building and construction activity based on current parameters. It includes national and regional breakdowns of actual and forecast residential, non-residential and infrastructure construction activities. Forecasts predict that 265,000 new dwellings will be authorized until 2026, an average of more than 44,000 dwellings per year.

“We expect high levels of residential construction in particular to continue for some time,” Poto Williams said.

“Despite the challenges caused by the pandemic, the sector has remained resilient and is now well positioned to maintain this momentum.”

“We will continue to work with the industry to help minimize the ongoing disruptions due to COVID-19.

“We recently commissioned the Commerce Commission to undertake a study of competition in New Zealand’s residential building materials markets. This study will focus on all factors that may affect competition for the supply or acquisition of key building materials used to construct major components of residential buildings.

“Ensuring access to building materials at a fair price is a key factor in the government’s decision to review this market, and I look forward to the report from the Commerce Commission in December 2022.”
