Digital Economy and Communications Minister Dr David Clark today announced exceptions to border classes for 600 badly needed tech workers.
“The sector is now one of our top three exporters, and tech jobs have grown twice as fast as the overall economy. It continued to expand during the COVID-19 pandemic, putting pressure on the demand for talent, ”said David. Clark said.
“The class exception announced today will relieve some of the pressure on New Zealand technology companies and support their continued growth and export revenues.
“We are carefully targeting areas of the industry where the industry has demonstrated a clear need for foreign talent, including software development, product managers, cybersecurity and interactive media.
“Over the past two years, the government has worked closely with the technology sector to address key opportunities and challenges facing the industry. At the top of the list is a mismatch between what skills are available nationally and what the sector needs.
“Providing this exception at the border is part of the next step in the government’s carefully phased approach to reconnecting with the world.
“We have seen other countries open up too soon and have to reverse their decisions. It is therefore a balancing act to support our economy and minimize the risks for our communities and our health system.
“Addressing the skills mismatch is crucial for the growth of the tech sector. However, the government also realizes that developing technological skills in New Zealand is fundamental for the industry to realize its potential.
“As part of an industry transformation plan partnership between the government and the technology industry, the sector is committed to investing in the development of domestic talent, rather than relying on foreign talent to fill gaps.
“I look forward to continuing to work with industry on how to ensure that the education system supports this, providing the skills that New Zealand industry needs,” said David Clark.
Further details regarding the border exception process will be provided to industry in the new year.
