A new exhibition at Taylor Jensen Fine Arts expresses Dennis Greenwood’s worldview, bringing with it his perspective on humanity.

Greenwood is a Levin-based watercolor artist whose second solo exhibition at the Palmerston North Gallery features paintings of New Zealand’s natural and man-made environment. He said the painting gives him a chance to change the world around him as he pleases.

“I can change the composition, the colors, the tone, put things that are not there, remove things that are there. This freedom to imagine the world around me is limited only by my imagination and well. sure my technical abilities. “

Greenwood says he finds that since the advent of photography, painting has struggled to find its place.

“Until the development of photography, painting had a job to do. A painting was the best way to permanently fix an image, a history lesson, what someone looked like, what a city or town looked like. rural. For almost the last For 200 years, it seems to me, painting has struggled to find a purpose, to replace functionality it no longer has. “

Greenwood is now living in semi-retirement teaching painting and drawing at home after teaching visual arts at the tertiary and high school levels. He said the outdoors gives him inspiration and determines what the work will look like, but most of his work is done in the studio.

“Watercolor is an inconstant medium, some parts of the work need to be dried at different speeds, but sometimes an unevenly dried wash spoils the effect it is intended for. I guess a studio environment provides facilities and the best luck. to control these things. “

Aquarelle Aspects: New Paintings by Dennis Greenwood opens September 15-26. A reception for the artist will take place on September 19, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
